Icons disappear - can't open anything

It sounds like the explorer.exe process, which basically
displays all icons, the taskbar/startmenu, and the
toolbars. You can try performing a system restore to an
earlier point, find a way to replace the explorer.exe
files and support DLLs, or you can backup, format, and
reload windows.
