You do not need to be aware of the version of Internet Explorer
if you use the Windows Update website to determine automatically
which patches your system requires. It figures it all out for
you.

To visit Windows Update, open up Internet Explorer and choose
Windows Update from the Tools menu.

Install at least all Critical updates.

The Automatic Updates should be installing the Critical Updates
for you, but please do check. The Automatic Updates will not
install other patches that are not deemed as Critical, so it's
advisable to install those yourself. Again, Windows Update will
let you know what updates are available to you.

As for the infected emails you are receiving, you could use a
program called Magic Mail Monitor to filter the emails while
they wait for you on your ISP's mail server. You can get it
free at http://mmm3.sourceforge.net/ - although the download
link is not working at the moment as it's down for maintenance.
Try later.

Good luck!
