These groups are slightly different than pure Usenet. There really is some
level of special significance to the MSNEWS.MICROSOFT.COM host (which is
also not a single server.)

However, I'm not a usenet expert, so I can't describe accurately how this
difference is significant.

Suffice to say that a large proportion of the users here are reading and
writing to Microsoft's in-house servers--both web-based

http://communities.microsoft.com/newsgroups/default.asp?icp=cddgall

and standard NNTP.

These include users whose ISP doesn't provide NNTP service, or doesn't
provide these groups, or whose service isn't worth using, etc.

So--the health of those servers is important to a large portion of the users
here--hence the thread.
