Microsoft Update

I received an email from Microsoft urging me to download
an update patch to prevent viruses and protect my
computer. I downloaded the file which is in .mim
format. But I can't figure out how to open the file or
what more I need to do to protect my computer. If anyone
can help I would appreciate the help.
