With EarthLink, you can have multiple mailboxes. Just go
to their support page and follow the instructions to
create a new e-mail address. (No extra charge). You can
still keep your old one if you want, just use the new one
as your "default" e-mail address. The old mailbox will
still fill up, but that shouldn't affect the new address.
The only flaw with this solution is that when you give
people your new e-mail address, you'll probably be giving
it to the unsuspecting individual whose computer is
infected with the virus and, once he/she puts your address
in his/her address book, the virus will start mailing
itself out to you again.
I received a batch of infected e-mail today. I checked
the message "properties" and was able to discover whose
computer was really sending me these messages (not the one
shown on the "From" line). I was then able to notify the
real sender that their computer was infected. (I don't
use web mail so I don't know if it has that feature. I
use Outlook Express). They took steps to rectify the
situation and I stopped receiving the infected e-mails.
If they had not been willing or able to go through the
steps to remove the virus, I would have asked them to
remove my e-mail address from their address book. If it
isn't in their computer's e-mail address book, it isn't
available for the virus to use.
