Thank you Philip and Michael,

I just tested on my own computer booting to Safe Mode and
ran a virus scan, using Norton AV. It seems to work well
enough, but raises a good question.

Can I be reasonably sure that a virus will not be doing its
damage even on a machine working in Safe Mode?

(In this particular case we are concerned with a virus that
may be trying to wipe the hard drive.)

>From a virus point of view, is there a decisive difference
between Safe Mode and Safe Mode with Dos Prompt?
