It's possible in XP, and also in Win2K.

However, I think most people (?) would boot in Safe Mode first. Reboot, and
as soon as it starts to load again press F8 every second or so until you get
a menu. Choose Safe Mode, or Safe Mode with Dos Prompt if preferred.
Windows runs in a "minimal" configuration - no networking, etc - but your
AntiVirus will probably run correctly. Be sure to download the latest
definition files - you can usually get these directly from the AV provider's
website and install them via CD or floppy.

There is also a "Recovery Console", which is an even lower level of boot -
available from CD if necessary. Search technet.microsoft.com for article

I notice that my new Norton SystemWorks disk is a bootable CD - that sounds
useful.
