Yes, this is expected if the old files were strictly for the old user. Your
choices:
1. re-assign rights
1.1 log in as Administrator and take ownership to the files
1.2 add you (as new user) to the permissions of the files (ALL access)
to do that right-click the file, select Properties
Security Tab
Advanced button
Owner Tab
select the new owner (the admin)
now again go to Security Tab and click Add, type your username and click
Check Name. After you added the name make sure that on the lower pane you
check "full control".
2. Since you have a backup, restore the files onto a FAT32 drive / partition
(eg. a USB thunm drive). FAT32 doesn't have permissions, so once you restored
the files, you can simply copy them over (from the FAT32 drive) as the new
user - and the new user will have ownership over them.
This latter may be faster than doing the above for each file you need.

After XP OS failure, Windows would not boot in SAFE mode. I did a.
Non-Destructive re-install (HP Laptop "D" partition). Apparently I gave the
computer a new name. Subsequent connection to Bank etc. gave message THEY did
not recognize the computer and asked for verification. No further problem
there.
On the PC I found that OS worked well but MANY of my files, .doc, .pdf etc.
were not accessible. Messages might be a cryptic ACCESS DENIER, or something
like PERMISSIONS and also THIS USER....etc.
I perused the KNOWLEDGE databases. I found IDENTITY. Also found that which
allows an Administrator to take control over files that belonged to a
departed person.
Following these procedures DID NOT GIVE me access to the files I desperately
need.
Presently there are THREE identities shown in DOCUMENTS and SETTINGS.
RESTORING files from my CARBONITE backup had the same IDENTITY problems,
therefore I am stuck unless someone with greater knowledge of XP can guide me
through this .
Thanks in advance for any help offered.
