Changing the location of keys and certificates

This is in regards to the crypto api set. I've had a request to give
users an option to change the default key locations, this is mainly so
that they can store their private keys on USB drives and such.
Furthermore, we only want to do this for keys associated with our
applications, leaving the rest in default storage areas. After a
brief search, this is not looking so easy. The less re-architecting
involved, the better. Can people give me some suggestions?

Also, keep in mind, while I'm familiar with crypto api set, I'm not so
familiar with smart card and related technologies.

Thanks, D
