How to add a friendly name to a certificate

How to add a friendly name to a certificate?.

when i open my certificate(double click) without using MMC I'm not
allowed to edit the properties of the certificate, but when I open it
from MMC I'm able to edit the properties and I able to set the
Certificate friendly name.

How to do this with out using MMC, what mus be the Problem.
