Force Prompt for User's Certificate

Our web site is set up for "certificate allow" access, which lets people hit
cancel and enter without presenting a certificate. We want to set up certain
pages on the site that are "certificate required". The problem is when
someone goes to a 'cert required' page after entering the site without
presenting their cert, they get an error page that tells them that a
certificate is required **but they are not given the opportunity to present
their certificate.** Is there some way to "force" the browser to request a
user's cert after they have started the session without authenticating with a
cert? TIA
