export/import .pfx,.cer and "Friendly Name"

I have a web server with some certs installed. I am using MMC Certificates
snap-in to view these certs. All of these certs display the "Friendly Name"
property.

I export private-key certs from WebServer1 to .pfx or .cer files. (The
export wizard decides for me what the suffix should be -- does anyone know
why ?)

When I import these certs into another machine (a development box),
importing from a .pfx file configures the "Friendly Name" property.

However, importing from a .cer file leaves "Friendly Name" blank. Does
anyone know why ?
