the stock answer here is "ask your network administrator". for example
our network is deliberately configured so as to only allow traffic from
the mail server and proxy server (and three developers' desktops)
we do this by turning off gateway assignment at the router - ordinary
users don't have a gateway, therefore need to go through the proxy or
mail server to reach the outside world.
I won't tell you how to get around this, because it's likely your LAN is
deliberately configured this way. sorry. ask your admin
