I think the KB article you referenced does in fact contain the
solution to your problem, at least if it was this one you read :

How is your site configured in IIS ? Are you using just an IP address
to identify the SSL enabled site ? Is the Sharepoint site the only one
on your server ? If so consider altering the IIS config to All
Unassigned as per the article.

It may also be that you have found a limitation in Sharepoint vis a
vis SSL and host headers (namely that they don't work together)
although there is a pointer in the above KB article which may offer a
solution - the SharePoint Services Scalable Hosting Mode
