Did they tell you _why_ not to do it, or was it just an all encompassing
"don't" ?

You should not install IIS on W2K or XP if you do not need IIS. Otherwise
make sure you're patched up and aware of what you are doing.
Your actual connection type has little to do with it, though I will concede
a modem that is never turned on will leave you less
exposed then an always on connection.
Important is ensuring you're aware of security issues and that OS is up to
date - not what connection you're using.
