The certificate common name must match the name used by the client to access
the site. That's all there is to it. If the common name is
www.yoursite.com, and you access it by browsing to yoursite.com, you'll get
an error. If you issue it with the IP, then you must browse to the site by
using https://x.x.x.x (where x.x.x.x is the server IP)--if you use anything
else, you'll get the error.

I've never tried using an IP, as it really defeats the purpose of the
system. If you use a name, and your IP changes, you don't need to shell out
the cake for a new cert (or reissue it yourself).

working, except I get "The name of the certificate is invalid or does not
match the name of the site." I have re-generated the certificate several
ways according to article 813618 and 232161. I am trying to use an ip
address instead of FQDN. (I understand that this is legal.) I have tried a
FQDN along with a host file, which fails also. Do I need a real DNS entry
out on the web for reverse lookup purposes? What is the exact syntax that
this thing wants? Thanks for any ideas.
