Shoot the moron who suggested that - it's papering over the cracks, not
actually stopping the unwanted traffic.

Oh, I get it - a joke. Not really funny. You know, I've been telling
people in this and other groups that a firewall is the best answer to
Messenger Service popups, because it stops the popups _and_ blocks unwanted
malicious packets - and I've been saying this for a good couple of months
now - well before Blaster. Every so often, someone will post that you
should just stop the Messenger Service, and it makes me sooooo mad.

Now that Blaster has demonstrated that everyone ought to be running a
firewall, it's important to keep recommending the firewall as a solution far
better than merely stopping the Messenger Service.

And you'll notice that this article points to
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/using/howto/communicate/stopspam.asp
- which tells you how to install a firewall, not how to disable Messenger
Service.
