SSL forces Windows Authentication?!?

Hi all,

I am having difficulty using SSL to connect to a sub-
application. The application is configured to accept
Anonymous access and it works fine as long as I don't use
http. However, as soon as I change it to https it pops up
a Windows Login (Enter Network Password) dialog box.

Here is the structure of the site:
-root site (iis application using .net 1.1)
-virtual-directory (another iis app using .net 1.1)
-sub-folder (yet another iis app using .net 1.1)

I can access the root site and the virtual directory using
https just fine but the sub-folder pops up the login box.
I don't see how it could be permissions because the sub-
folder inherits the permissions from it's parent; the
virtual directory (sub-folder is a physical sub-directory
not a virual directory) I even did a "reset permissions
on all children" from the parent directory to be sure I
wasn't missing anything.

Is there something I'm missing here? Any help would be
appreciated!
