trusting a self signed cert - works sometimes

I have my own server, and I've been able to import the certs I create
into my Trusted Root. When I go to our remote offices servers (across
the internet) and get prompted to accept/reject the self signed cert
(created on that machine) no matter how many times I export it and
import it I can't get it to stay in the Trusted Root.

The remote network is behind a firewall and the cert server is not
exposed through the firewall - I notice that the certificate says "The
issuer of this certificate could not be found." on the certification
path.

Does the remote servers cert server have to be exposed?

Can I export the certificate at the remote server to a diskette and then
properly import it on my local systems?
