w3svc service failing

i remember getting a similar error in NT long back , but
at that time during re-instalation setup was giving error
too.
I replaced the metabase by the backup metabase it worked .
You can try the same or can use the editmetabase utility
from microsoft.com.
Ofcourse this may be of no help to you but I can assure
you a corrupt metabase can be a real pain.
