w3svc service failing

Hi,
Apologies, this was posted before several days ago to this
group but seems have disappeared.
The w3 service fails to start with msg: "The service
metabase path '/LM/W3SVC' could not be opened" (path not
found). System: WinXP Pro.
Tried uninstalling and reinstalling IIS several times but
this doesn't fix problem.
