Windows Authentication security

Hi. Our company's web site has several directories we
protect with Windows Authentication directory security,
some are available to the public.
I thought IIS would not prompt users to log in to the web
site that uses only Windows Authentication security if
they are already logged on to our network, yet our IIS
does. Is this correct?
If not, is there a way to do that while still having the
log in prompt if people are trying to access the site from
outside of our network?
Thanks
