It's not so much a question of session state (our applications are actually
stateless). All authentication is handled by IIS directly; i.e. credentials
must be supplied to IIS before our application begins a single thread of
execution. We need a way to redirect the user to another virtual server and
another application pool, while passing the previously supplied credentials.
