Tim
There are a number of things that you are gogin to have to confornt here and
Im sure that I will be corrected or that other people have other ways of
doing it.
Firstly your Router will be seperating you from the internet by using a NAT,
Network Address Translation. This allows one public IP from your ISP to be
used by a number of pc's inside your newtork. The IP's inside your network
will use non-routable IP's usually in the range of 192.168.xxx.xxx or
10.xxx.xxx.xxx. So to get from your public IP to your internal IP you will
need to set up a pointer. That will work like so; request to remote desk top
goes to public IP, this is handeled by your Router, if you have told your
router where this request should go to then it will forward on the request
to the machine with the IP you have told it to forward to.
To achieve this you will have had to configure your router/firewall/NAT to
know what to do with your request. To find out how to do thisa you ill need
to refer to your manufactureres documentation. Linksys will have forums
about how to achieve this. But it usually works on somehting on the lines
of; open my public IP at this port and forward anytraffic on that port to
this IP on this port.
Remote Desk top connection works on port 3389, that is the port for terminal
services, you will need forward request to your public IP to the machine's
IP that you want to connnect to.
That should allow you in then. I will post back with some more info about
how to harden your remote desktop conection by changing the port that you
normally connect on. This will stop and random ppl knowing that you have
your RDC open on your firewall.
Let me know how you get on.
Thanks
Bob
