Well, this is probably nothing, but I would try using the free
www.sygate.com firewall.

Pressing CTRL-ALT-DEL [and selecting task manager if that is one of the
options] can help you see the programs and processes currently running on
your computer. using vision from www.foundstone.com/knowledge can help
determine some of what you're looking for... also a trojan scanner such as
www.pestpatrol.com, an antivirus scanner such as norton or www.grisoft.com
[free] with the latest updates. Also Startup Cop which can be downloaded by
searching www.google.com to look for programs starting when your computer
loads.

Last, consider an anti-adware / popup blocker and see the other suggestions
