New Server Secure Enough?

I'm going to run one of my machines as an IIS web server, which will be
available on the web. Before I open it up to the whole world, what security
measures should I take to ensure that the data on my machine is safe?

I have Windows XP Professional, and I plan to use the built in XP security
(by adding users to the PC), plus an additional database check to see if the
user is approved. Will that be enough?
