computer will not authenticate

I have a weebsite with a member area, i have set the
system up thus:

I ran the permissions wizard for a public site and reset
all the ntfs persmissions ect.

in the members area i crated a group under users and
groups on the server called cbl-1

I added a test user to it

I added the group to the ntfs security on the folder and
all the files with in it and removed the "everyone group"

i turned off under iis the anonimous access and turned on
basic authetication

if aks me for the user name and password but will not
accept it.

if i turn on NT authentication ( the middle option) it
will work BUT only on IE browswers runing windows .

any idea what i am doing wrong? i have set up several
machines this way and have not had this issue before
