I agree with the other post, a software firewall is not a replacement for a
hardware firewall. However, a software firewall in addition to a hardware
firewall is something to be considered.

Software firewalls include Sygate [my preference, free for non-commercial
use, $30 US for business use], BlackIce Defender from www.iss.net [also $30
US], some people like ZoneAlarm and Kerio [formerly Tiny Personal Firewall],
though I can't confirm whether these last two products are acceptable for
use on servers.

Entry-level hardware firewalls start with Netgear starting at $70 US. [The
$70 Netgear router is not a full featured firewall, but does allow packet
filtering rules and stateful inspection and is better than nothing. Other
options could include a Netscreen 5XP for around $500, or if you have the
inclination to learn, you could try running a free Linux or BSD firewall on
an old 486 or 586 PC. Some of them such as IPCop and Smoothwall supposedly
have easy to use configuration screens aimed at novices. ClosedBSD has a
simple menu and runs off of a single boot floppy.
