You have a good point that an on-access virus scanner might not always be
such a good idea for performance on a large server farm. However, I think
it is not such a bad idea for sites of 5 users like the one described in
this post. If you wanted to, on a server farm you could use the on-demand
virus scanner to scan the hard drive from time to time.
Antivirus software like any other tool is only as good as the person using
it, so if the administrator lets it give them a false sense of security, the
real problem IMHO is the administrator's lack of knowledge about good
security, which isn't fixed by not installing antivirus.
