The discussion is based on the supposition that spammers could point
a stateful packet sniffer at a web server to grab e-mail addresses
contained in outgoing packets.
We all know by observation that when somebody clicks on an
HTML anchor element using the mailto: protocol that doing so will
launch a client mail application and populate a new instance of a
mail message with an e-mail address.
So why have spammers bothered harvesting e-mail addresses from
the body of web pages?
