Okay, a nice discovery:

I couldn't find clear documentation on this anywhere (some samples would be
a nice help, MS!), so further experimentation showed that the literal site
name from the URL is what is expected here. So, using "Localhost" for the
certificate's Common Name makes it work when browsing from IIS, and using
the machine's IP address (it doesn't have a DNS entry) makes it work when
accessed that way.
