Damien i had the same problem two weeks ago...
The Server Certificate you have chosen in IIS-Directory Security tab is
probably invalid or is the Root CA Certificate.
What i did was to install Certificate Services as a standalone CA, then
requested a server certificate from IIS and finally submitted this request
to
my standalone CA in order to get a valid Server Certificate...The new
Certificate looked like MyCompany CA Root/www.mysite.com!
The whole proccess is through http://machinename/certcrv/ that is created
automatically after installing Certification Services (you need Win 2K
Server for the installation).
Then through http://machinename/certcrv/ again i requested client
certificates from remote computers in my domain.
The "trick" is to select Advanced Options in the web form for the request
when are about to issue a server certificate...else User Certificate will do
for client certificate request!
I hope this will help you...
Be patient though because the documentation is really messy...
