Well, it has its downsides, and I'll admit to never having used it. That
being said, though, plain telnet was a nightmare that lasted for
decades[1], so it's still an improvement.

[1] And I'm still not entirely convinced it's dead everywhere it should
be[2].
[2] Running a MUD over telnet, or somesuch, is fine of course.
