You're right. I was taking the server name mentioned in the source
users public key to be an entry in /etc/hosts, but it appears to be the
server name is in uname -n. I verified that on another host that I was
successful in logging in automatically via public and private LAN
addresses. This authentication problem that causes a password prompt
must be something else. Thanks for the prompt that corrected my
assumptions about ssh-keygen.
