... so ask your friendly local sysadmin to install that or something similar.
If you've got enough permissions to get and compile it yourself you
could, but starting with asking the sysadmin for the functionality you
want (then strategically adding that you think the following list of
programs will fit the bill...) is the best way to get it without pissing
off your admin.

Well, you shouldn't work on it so you can't delete stuff there. How is
that your problem? Why do you bother?
