The /dev/ad0, /dev/ad1 reference (in his later post) makes me believe
FreeBSD. If this is correct, then there is a FreeBSD port available:

There's also GNU ddrescue (as distinguished from dd_rescue), but I have
no experience with it: <http://www.gnu.org/software/ddrescue/ddrescue.html>
