ad-zapp (http://adzapper.sourceforge.net) works great for me
it replaces a wide-array of ads by default, thus speeding browsing, and
it easy to add more ad sites or functionalilty as documented

i also added an ACL to squid.conf to block things specifically -- two
teenagers, doncha know -- i call my ACL "sukdomain" and have a list of
44 in there now
