If you can do port forwarding, you can forward any local port to
localhost:110 on the remote system, so you can fetch your mail from
localhost:theportyouselected.
I'm using fetchmail to do this automatically from a system where no other
user can interfere. I never tried what would happen if the port I selected
were in use by another user.
