Some switches let you set up monitoring port to get around this.
If yours doesn't, you can set up the sniffer as transparent bridge
and put it between the hub and router (and also do packet fitering
there). OpenBSD has bridging built-in, I assume FreeBSD does too.
Otherwise yes, you'll need either a non-switching hub or a switch
that can do monitoring port.
