Your manager knows nothing, in fact he tries to bring argument
from newspapers. That level of expertize won't increase
your security.

We have simular managers in sweden. And we have simular problems
with unsecure windows machines.

Security comes from knowledge, responsibility and power to enforce
a (well-written)security policy. Leaning against a vendor (any vendor)
is no good substitute.
