"wall" may write stuff to values that are supposed to be terminals
found in these files. Making these world-writable could lead to
modified config files. (I've long thought that a ~/.rhosts file should
not be counted if any line in it is of invalid format.)

Does AIX have the same name for anything ?
I think I remember utmp,wtmp being in /etc/ with SunOS.
There might be clues here - or ask for your money back from google.
