Here's another way to look at it. I've recently gone through this process
and decided on the following,
though I'm not sure it's the vest solution, it fits my budget and
circumstances.

First of all, any solution for Solaris needs to be licensed for Solaris and
is therefore more costly.
I decided to go with a LINUX version of BakBone's NETVAULT. Like you, I have
a narrow
window of backup opportunity and out of the few I evaluated, NETVAULT was
the easiest
setup, most intuitive and by far the fastest.
My first choice was VERITAS but they jerked me around so much with their
pricing structure
(so many layers) that I lost interest. They may be very good but I couldn't
get an eval until I
actually decided not to buy from them.
Because LINUX (RedHat) and Solaris play so nice together, I made some
compromises.
The price difference from Solaris to LINUX version was so good that I was
able to buy
a new SUN VX65 server, dual 2.8Ghz, 2MB Ram with dual 10,100,1000 Mhz Nics
and
still save money. I would have had to buy a new Sun Solaris box which would
have
blown my budget.
Plus, NETVAULT is non-proprietary and I can start a rebuild command line as
well.
I am purchasing an Overland Data NEO 4100 (dual SDLT 320 drives with 52
tapes).
This is expandable to 104 tapes and up to 8 drives. Don't forget the need
for expansion.
Most people get caught short when data expands rapidly. You don't want to be
in the same position
2-3 years from now.
I also demoed ARKEIA for Solaris but found it "cheesy." It worked OK but I
just didn't feel
right about it.
I also looked at Syncsort a while ago but could never get it working with my
tape library.
Several calls to thier support group yielded no help. Their sales people
call at least once a month
for a year trying to get me to buy. If I can't get their product to work, I
don't want it...Period.

Though I only have a single UNIX platform, I back up a mixed bag of data.
Many small files in
a deeply hierachical scheme take much longer to back up versus large flat
files.
I also back up about 30 individual drives as well as several large RAID
systems on servers.
On the individual clients, they backup across the network. For my servers
and RAID systems,
I can do it either of two ways. I can backup disk to disk (raid5) and
multi-mount the backup raid
to two data servers and to the backup server. This way, I can backup to tape
during the day when
users are in production. Of course, the backup RAID is a luxury but affords
me a very quick
restore in case I lose data or more commonly, someone accidently deletes
something in the morning.
I found this very useful.

Hope this helps...GeorgeC
