    Unix doesn't store passwords, only password hashes, typically in
    /etc/passwd or possibly in /etc/shadow.

    Google is your friend. Or, if you have access to a Unix system,
    read manpages. `man 3 crypt` should tell you a bit about the
    algorithm.
