Well to simulate a wan your lan on the router would be fine for now.
Yes the traffic is not going to be the same but just to learn/test you
have a machine with an ip which is reachable at least. Or another
option is ask your dsl provider for a 2nd ip go from the modem to a
hub and then the router wan port with one machine behind it and 2nd
machine to the hub has the 2nd external isp provided ip. Most likely
the two isp related ips might not even be on the same subnet. Thats
the easiest way to simulate 2 machines on the "internet".

As for tools if you are using gnu-linux/bsd/solaris etc.. most have
the ssh client and server. The port scanners are numerous and vuln
scanners are available.
