The information in the following Security Bulletin should be
acted upon as soon as possible. Hewlett-Packard Company will
not be liable for any consequences to any customer resulting
from customer's failure to fully implement instructions in this
Security Bulletin as soon as possible.

PROBLEM: Sendmail Restricted Shell (smrsh) may let local users
          bypass restrictions to execute code.

IMPACT: The potential vulnerability may allow authorized users
        to execute unauthorized programs.

PLATFORM: HP 9000 Series 700 and 800 running HP-UX 11.00,
          11.04, 11.11, 11.22.

SOLUTION: Until patches are available download and install
          fixed versions of /usr/sbin/smrsh from the ftp
          site.

MANUAL ACTIONS: Yes - NonUpdate
                Download and install fixed versions of
                /usr/sbin/smrsh from the ftp site.

AVAILABILITY: This bulletin will be revised when patches
               are available.
 ------------------------------------------------------------------
 A. Background
    Sendmail Restricted Shell (smrsh) may let local users
    bypass restrictions to execute code.
  
    HP Tru64 UNIX is not vulnerable to this reported problem.

 B. Recommended solution

    Download the appropriate files from:

     System: hprc.external.hp.com (192.170.19.51)
     Login: smrsh
     Password: smrsh1

    FTP Access: smrsh1@hprc.external.hp.com/">ftp://smrsh:smrsh1@hprc.external.hp.com/
            or: ftp://smrsh:smrsh1@192.170.19.51/

      Note: There is an ftp defect in IE5 that may result in
            a browser hang. To work around this:
      - Select Tools -> Internet Options -> Advanced
      - Un-check the option: [ ] Enable folder view for FTP sites.

     The files are:

     smrsh.1100 # 11.00 and 11.04
     smrsh.1111
     smrsh.1122

     cksum 3401290743 20480 smrsh.1100
     cksum 3416816647 16384 smrsh.1111
     cksum 3349307890 16020 smrsh.1122

     MD5 (smrsh.1100) = 729434fce224e59351f8ef0d84123c3b

     Copy the appropriate files to a secure directory,
     for example /. Then:

      cd /usr/sbin
      mv smrsh smrsh.orig

      cp /smsrh.1100 smrsh # 11.00 and 11.04
        or
      cp /smsrh.1111 smrsh # 11.11
        or
      cp /smsrh.1122 smrsh # 11.22

      chmod 511 smrsh
      chown bin:bin smrsh

 C. To subscribe to automatically receive future NEW HP Security
