Just for the record, I did not write that. Someone messed up the quotes.
I do not agree that the computer becomes public property any more than
this horrible analogy to this house and a public street. Connecting with
the Internet means there is a risk someone will try to connect to your
computer, malicius or not. It's how the Internet works.
Trying to compare the Internet with a street, and your computer with
your house is silly. Probing random IP addresses for vulnerable hosts
is equally silly. You cannot expect everyone on the Internet to live
up to _your_ expectations about what is decent behaviour, thus designing
medical equipment so that it relies on administration from the Internet
somehow, as described previous in this thread, is just plain stupid.
However, to attempt an answer to the original posters question, don't
ever try unless talking to a knowledgeable lawyer first. And don't
take anything written in this newgroup for true unless your lawyer
agree. Then you can always sue your lawyer if it turns out to be
illegal after all.
Just my .5 EUR rant..
