However, you are asking for trouble if you get anywhere near
there. Limits of both 14 and 31 characters were common until
recently and, though the former was mostly in /etc/utmp and
caused only minor trouble, some programs had trouble with long
names until very recently. Many probably still do, but I doubt
at such low limits.
Generally, going over a dozen characters between dots or about
80 in all started to provoke oddities or worse until very recently
and may still do. Despite the fact that such behaviour is a
clear bug according to the RFCs :-(
