Agreed, but then again, a lot of the recruiters know nothing about this.
I think having a certification, unless turned into a "hey, look at me!
I'm certified! I rule!"-statement on your resume, can be a good thing
for those who lack years of documented experience and/or education.
If you just want to do this for fun, (not really needing it on your
resume, not really looking for new places to work) then brainbench,
as another poster mentioned, might be just what you need. There are
rumors that Brainbench certifications are actually worth something
when applying for jobs, but I've never met a recruiter or HR person
who's ever heard of them. But then, I'm in northern europe. Most of
you reading this are probably not.
As for online references, it depends greatly on what kind of certification,
and (possibly) what kind of Unix you know best. SAGE (www.usenix.org/sage)
has some serious certification programs, and AFAIK at least IBM, Sun and HP
has sysadmin certifications for their products. Probably SGI and several
other vendors as well. What do you want? :)
