If you're looking for certifications to show that you know how to do
the technical side of security work (as opposed to the managerial and
policy side), take a look at the GIAC certifications from SANS. There
are several available now, most of which you can take and pass
entirely online. They're not easy, though. One of the reasons
they're so well respected is that not only do you have to take a
written test, but you have to complete a research assignment just to
prove you're qualified to take the test. Nothing too difficult, but
enough to show you truely understand the material and are not just
someone who happens to take tests well. I recommend starting with their
Security Essentials cert (GSEC) if you choose to go this route. Check
out their website at www.giac.org.

You might also look into the checkpoint or Cisco certifications. Both
are well known, popular vendors. Although having the vendor certs won't
necessarily show you are a well-rounded security practitioner, they can't
hurt. It might be an advantage if you interview with a company that uses
their products heavily.

Or what the heck, get 'em all. Then you're covered. 8-)
