shouldn't that read tar tvf... you don't want to extract, only to list the
contents... also, in case it's a lengthy index, you probably want to
redirect the output to a file, not sit and watch teh screen... better yet:
nohup tar tvf /dev/rmt/xxxx &
log out, and come back after a good few cups of coffee -- _if_ it's even a
tar archive....
